Ingrown and fungal toenails

Ingrown and fungal toenails

What is an ingrown toenail?

Ingrown toenails are among the most common foot problems that cause pain and discomfort. It is very important to recognize this problem early and seek treatment; otherwise, the condition can progress from a simple to a severe level. Ingrown toenails can result from many causes, including but not limited to injury, infection, improper cutting of the nails, improperly fitting shoes or the inherited shape of the nail. Depending on the cause, duration and severity of the problem, treatments can include soaks, antibiotics or temporary clipping of the ingrown section of the nail. Many times correction is warranted and requested to permanently solve this problem. After treatment, patients can wear their own shoes immediately and resume almost all activities.

What are fungal toenails?

This is a very common problem often associated with an accompanying, itchy, athlete’s foot reaction. The toenails are very thick and discolored with a brown or yellowish look. Most of the time they are difficult to clip and care for and are uncomfortable in the corners and possibly on the top of the toe. Treatments can include oral and topical antifungals, routine podiatric care and laser therapy for correction.
